Sportivate Funding

As part of the Olympic legacy and in the build up to the London 2012 Games, Wychavon District Council could have a fantastic funding opportunity for you!

Working with the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Wychavon have been successful in attracting a 2nd year of Sport England ‘Sportivate’ funding.

£8,500 has been set aside for sport clubs, schools, youth clubs, uniformed groups and other community organisations to run sports projects from April 2012 to March 2013

To qualify for the funding the sports projects must target residents aged between 14 and 25 in the Wychavon area. They must also offer six weeks of high quality sports and activity sessions that will inspire teenagers and young adults to want to sign up and commit to more sport in the future.

This programme is all about choice, a choice to try something different and give it a go. Sports and activities on offer in year 1 included Equestrian, Bell-boating, Zumba, Windsurfing, Ice Skating and Curling plus many more.

Mark Williams, Sports Development Officer, said: “We recognise the valuable contribution that sporting activities can bring to the health and wellbeing of the community. We also recognise that funding may be an issue in creating new and innovative sports projects.  So if you have an exciting project that fits the bill then this could be the ideal opportunity for you to get it up and running.”

If you have a project in mind and would like more information then please contact Laura Barnard before the 2nd Dec 2011 to receive an expression of interest form.

Become a Sport Maker!

In a recent poll on the Sport Partnership, Herefordshire and Worcestershire website, 78% of you told them you had been unsuccessful in getting tickets to the London 2012 Olympic Games.  If you were one of them, then don't despair as there is more than one way to be a part of London 2012 and the legacy of The Olympic Games...

The Sports Partnership are looking for people like you to help them spread the magic of the Olympic and Paralymic Games far and wide across the two counties.

They would like to invite you to become a Sport Maker - one of 40,000 people nationally to bring sport and the spirit and values of The Games to life in a local community setting. Becoming a Sport Maker is easy and you don't have to be 'super fit and sporty' to get involved. The programme is your chance to create your own piece of Olympic history and make sport happen in your local community.

For more information on what Sport Makers is and how you can get involved, visit our website at www.morethansport.com/sportmakers

Or if you already know what the programme is about and want to sign up, then head straight over to www.sportmakers.co.uk to register your details.

Promoting Local Sport

yoursportpages.com and TOUCH FM believe reward and recognition plays a huge part in raising awareness of local sport and encouraging youngsters to participate. So they have come together so that local teams and clubs and anyone else who is involved with grassroots sport can raise their profile and have their news read out live on air.

To get your news mentioned on live radio (four news bulletins daily) to over 800,000 listeners all you have to do is upload your news onto yoursportpages.com and they'll do the rest.

It's FREE, it's easy to use, it raises the clubs/teams profile and with all that free publicity it should make life a little easier when looking for that all important sponsorship.

Super Sailing Success

In partnership with the Royal Yachting Association, Wychavon District Council ‘Sport Unlimited’ funding inspired 24 young people from local schools to try their hand at Sailing.

As a result of the project at least 10 young people have been sailing at Upton Warren Sailing Club ever since and one participant even went on to win a number of trophies at the Worcestershire School Sailing Association's summer regatta.

Tom Davenport ‘Onboard Development Officer’ said: One pupil, Seb Andrews from Wiiton Middle School, has just represented Worcestershire in his first National Championships!! He's developing into a really good little sailor, definitely a success of the system!’

‘With the support we received from Mark Williams (Sports Development Officer) and the funding from Wychavon this project has made significant impact on sailing in the local area and the club at Upton Warren’.

Rounders England

Rounders England are currently working to attract more people to play their sport. Here is just a taster of what they are currently working on:

Clubs - Reshaping their approach to club development to offer a range of environments. This will see Rounders England move away from STAR centres and focus on an infrastructure that caters for a wider range of participants.

Higher Education - Supporting universities to encourage more students to play Rounders. During 2011-2012 they will work with a total of nine universities.

Indoor Rounders - Rounders England are committed to support participation throughout the year and understand the cost of indoor facilities can sometimes be prohibitive. To assist clubs in initiating participation throughout the winter, they have allocated a development budget to support.

Competition - Rounders England are supporting ‘School Games’, the government’s policy on school sport. The programme will look to encourage more young people to compete to their ‘Personal Best’ with access being made available to all young people.

Rounders England have been invited to be involved in School Games to define their offer between September and December 2011 and to be deliver by January 2012.

Alongside doubles partner Alec Allen (Lincolnshire), Rowe won the Grade 1 ITF Over 45s Majorcan Seniors Open Championships Title, at Font de sa Cala, Majorca.  Playing on slow clay courts in temperatures of more than 35 degrees, the two Englishmen needed all the energy they could muster to win the title.

In the semi-final they beat the fellow British pairing of Peter Stewart, and Anthony Marchetti 6,3 6,1,and in the final, Rowe and Allen beat Girts Dzelde (Latvia) and Walter Brodbeck (Germany) 6,2 6,3.

Rowe said "For me and Alec to win an International doubles title at the highest veterans level of Grade 1, is a huge achievement, also knowing that one of our doubles opponents (Dzelde) used to partner Kafelnikov on occasions, makes it an even better win. We are really happy".

They are the first organisation to recognise their talent, often when their parents are their only sponsors.

By raising money in the name of sport, for the benefit of sport, they ensure Britain’s young sports stars have the backing they need to reach the same heights. SportsAid has distributed more than £30 million to athletes throughout Britain and gives around 2,000 awards every year.
