Interview with Mark Williams, Sports Development Officer at Wychavon District Council

What does your job entail?

To get more people, more active, more often! By planning and delivering local/national sports initiatives and events. By providing support, advice and guidance on club/coach development, funding and opportunities to get more people involved in sport and physical activity!

What projects are currently you working on?

With the Olympic Games just around the corner this is a very exciting year for sport and I am involved in the planning and delivery of two Olympic Torch Relay events and ‘Olympic Legacy’ inspired Community Games such as Evesham Festival of Sport, Droitwich 2012 Legacy Day and the Pershore Sport Relief Mile.

Other key projects this year include planning a delivering a wide range of sports activities for young people aged 14-25yrs through Sportivate (Sport England initiative) and working with the Specialist Sports Colleges to provide an after school sports program for first schools.

What sports are you personally interested in?

All of them, honest!!! But in particular Snowboarding, Rugby, Trail Running, Fishing and Cycling.

What’s your proudest moment through your career?

Getting the job in the first place was a pretty special moment, followed by the first time I organised a tournament, did a radio interview, ran holiday schemes and managed a team of sports coaches

Hobbies: Apart from sport, I love to travel, experiencing new things, walking the dog, seeing family/friends and going to the pub!

What is your favourite saying, quote or motto?

‘If you build it, they will come…’ (Field of Dreams)

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes please,  I’m doing a charity cycle ride this Easter, 1400+ miles from Rome (Italy) to Evesham (UK) a whopping 1400+ bum numbing miles in just two weeks! I’m doing this with 10 friends from Evesham Rugby Club in the hope of raising £20,000 for Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

This daunting challenge is being undertaken as a mark of gratitude to the Neurology Department, for their huge efforts in trying to save the life of a good friend and fellow rugby player Matt Brace who tragically passed away from a head injury in May 2011.

The cycle will begin in Rome on 31st March and by travelling 100 miles a day we hope to be home on 15 April 2012 (my birthday!) for a HUGE Welcome Home Party!!

To find out more and/or to donate please visit

……Go on why not show your support and sponsor Mark for this amazing challenge!

*New* Norton Community Youth Club

Thursday 26th January saw the opening of the Norton Community Youth Club and attracted 30 young people from the local area to join in the fun.

As well as the Wychavon Youth Bus attending with its array of fund activities the club also offered pool, table tennis, Wii games and music, not to mention free pizza.  The youth club is being managed by Dennis and Tracey Hodgkins and is an outcome of the success of the Norton Community Games event held last June 2011.

The club is open every Thursday evening between 5pm and 7pm for anyone who lives in the parish or nearby districts.

Chairman of Norton Community Games Mike Goode said “Roger Weston at Worcester Cricket Club has helped to alleviate the main issue by allowing the Youth Club to use its facilities, in recognition of the support the club receives over the summer months and it will be good to see the facilities used all year round.”  “This latest development will help the long term future of the club to prove what a valuable asset it is to the local community”

Dennis Hodgkins said “Following the Community Games event last year, this Youth Club is a natural progression for young people to become more involved in sports, arts and dance activities. Moreover, the volunteer staff has asked the youngsters what they want to do over the next few weeks and have a number of outings and activities planned for when the lighter nights arrive. One of the clubs values is to give as much empowerment to the young members as possible whilst offering support and guidance. This week we have a skittles tournament planned and as well as our usual activities the clubs young members will be organising things”

Pershore Women’s Touch Rugby Club Win Local Sponsors Ahead of Saracens Game

Pershore Women’s Touch Rugby Club will now ‘look the part’ thanks to a local family business, who have sponsored new match kit for the non-contact-rugby playing team ahead of a key fixture.

Boughton Fuel Oils of Droitwich, who supply kerosene for businesses and residents in the county, agreed to support the women, who played at the interval at one of Worcester Warriors matches recently.

At the 12,000-spectator, sell-out game the women, in their new kit, put on a half-time demonstration match of the non-contact sport, touch rugby. They played against Crowle Originals, who are made up of the original women who set up Crowle Ladies Touch Rugby Club, in May 2011, which was the forerunner to Pershore Women’s Touch Rugby Club.

Fizz Bewley, 48, who is the founder of the women’s team, says that Boughton Fuel Oil’s support has been a major boost for the club:  “Boughton have, literally, fuelled our club’s progress!  We are all having such fun playing touch rugby, but having a professional, attractive set of match kit has given our ladies a big boost because it is the final part of us all coming together as a proper team.  And to be wearing our new kit at the Saracens v Warriors game is really the cherry on top of the cake for us all!”

Any female, aged 13 or over, can come and have a go at Touch Rugby, either by coming along to Pershore RFC, Mill Lane, Wyre Piddle on a Wednesday at 7.30pm, when the ladies train, or get in contact.  The club are running a special “have a go” promotion, where the first 6 sessions are free and, thereafter, training costs £5 per month, so why not give it a go!?

Eckington Junior Football Club

After a very cold end to January football has returned in earnest to The Rec. The club was very lucky to be one of the only few around to have still been able to play football by using the all weather surfaces at both Pershore High School and Tewkesbury School.

Semi-final weekend saw mixed fortunes with teams in both semi’s in the U11 and U9 Cup. Unfortunately U11 JFC, who are playing a year above their age group lost out to a very good Central Ajax team with the U11 Juniors and

U9 Juniors both beating Pershore and Lenches. Finals to be played in April. All age groups now have matches to look forward to over the next few months with league titles in the balance. The U7 squad of players are playing regular matches and new players welcome.

Talks with Bredon Rugby Club are well underway to use the Westmancote site as an overspill for football matches, and they are waiting for the consultation period with local residents to finish before applying to change the planning permission to use the site on Saturday mornings.

24th March see’s ‘Sport Relief’ come to The Rec and Eckington Juniors FC invite all to complete the ‘Sport Relief Mile’ with proceeds to Sport Relief alongside this event will be a sponsored Car Wash by the football players with proceeds towards kit for the up and coming Football Tour.

As always they welcome any new players of all abilities at 9am every Saturday to train or play in matches from U5 to U11 age group. Eckington Juniors are still looking for land locally to help ‘s in the U11 with club expansion and to continue to develop and cater for the endless stream of boys and girls wanting to join the club, but have the option of using the facilities at Pershore High school when stretched a t the Rec

The club also boast 3 members being called up to represent the County winning gold, one swimming with distinction at the National Age Group Champs, five making the Midland Champs and to crown it all two of their swimmers being declared Hereford and Worcester Junior Sports persons of the year in their annual awards.

In a Level 3 Open Meet in December ten of their members won 31 medals between them with 11 medals being gold in colour. Whilst in swimming’s highest class Level One Open Meet in the 50m International Pool in Corby Tazmin Pugh came away with 5 gold medals, a silver and a bronze and climbing the UK rankings still further.

22 of their swimmers set about raising money for St Richard’s Hospice at the same time setting themselves a challenge to see if they could swim the equivalent of the channel in the distance covered at Pershore leisure Centre. They had no idea they would eventually not only surpass their target but double it by the swimming the equivalent of the channel BOTH ways with over 72,000 metres swum.  It was all organized under the watchful eyes of Sharon Burton with her own daughter Emily swimming 5,000m and collecting £300 alone with the total expected to be over £800.

Most recently by the third of the County Championships for which 22 of their members had qualified the club were once again in winning form taking home thirteen medals with seven of them gold.   Tazmin Pugh had already won gold and silver in the 800m and 1500 events and won another two golds in the 50m back and 100m fly.   Meanwhile Simon Sweatman made his debut by winning gold in the three events he was able to enter the 100m Individual Medley (IM); 50m back; 200m free.   Chris Vizard won silver in the 200m free and bronze in the 100m IM;   with William Gearey bronze in the 50m back; Harry Sykes two bronze medals in the 50m back and 100m IM and Isobella Woodcock a silver in the 200m breaststroke.

• It has community support.

• It is well planned and involves as many local people as possible.

Western Power Distribution Community Chest

Western Power Distribution (WPD) has just launched their Community Chest grant scheme, and £50,000 is available to enable communities to install energy efficiency measures in community buildings.

The grant is being administered by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) who can also provide expert advice and guidance to help groups to carry out an audit of their buildings.  Community groups within the WPD area, which serves the Midlands, South and West Wales and the South West of England, can apply for grants of up to £1000.  This money can be used to pay for simple but effective energy efficiency measures that will not only reduce energy costs, but also reduce the carbon emissions of the buildings the community groups use for their activities.

Eligible measures include insulating loft spaces, installing energy monitors, draught proofing windows and doors, fitting effective heating controls and installing low energy lighting.  The application process is simple. Groups are asked to submit a short application form and provide quotes for recommended improvements, as well as completing an audit of their building. Guidance is provided on CSE’s website

Your chance to protect your local playing fields

Wychavon residents are being urged to bid for a share of £10 million that’s being made available to preserve, restore or even buy local playing fields.

The Protecting Playing Fields campaign has been launched to create a nationwide sporting legacy for the 2012 Olympics.

Mark Williams, Sports Development Officer, said: “This is a fantastic chance for local people to get their hands on some serious cash to help ensure that playing fields in Wychavon are protected for generations to come.”

Grants of between £20,000 and £50,000 will be available, with the money available to:

·        Bring disused playing fields back into use

·        Improve the condition of pitches (e.g. levelling, drainage, reseeding)

·        Buy new playing field land (not less than 0.2 hectares)

·        Buy existing playing field land where there is a known threat to its future, such as the expiry of a lease or a development proposal.

Mark said: “Playing fields, whether they’re in our rural villages or our towns, are often the best sports facilities around. They’re a fantastic free-to-use resource and it’s really important that they can be preserved and improved for future generations.

Rumour has it! This pot of funding has been under-subscribed nationally and especially in the Worcestershire area! So don’t delay, get applying today.

The Protecting Playing Fields fund is being distributed by Sport England.
