INTERVIEW WITH EMMA BANGHAM – PROGRAMME
MANAGER AT
NUMBER 8
COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE
What have you been
up to this week?
The brochure for the
Winter Season has just been printed so I’ve been organising distribution
and catching up on admin, producing contracts for private hires and
performances. I’ve also had a meeting with box office staff to launch the
season. I’ve also been working on audience surveys to find out what
families and children would like to see more of at Number 8.
Did you study at
University and if so, what course?
I did a degree in
English and History of Art, which included aspects of media. At a later
stage while I was working full time I did a part time MA in European
Cultural Policy and Management.
How many jobs
have you had before this one? What were they?
I worked at Light
House Media Centre for 11 years where I was Marketing Coordinator, film
programmer and organiser of hires. After that I worked as Marketing Manager
at The Drum, an African Caribbean and South Asian Arts Centre in Birmingham for 18
months. I then worked as Education, Archive and Audience Development
Officer at Screen West Midlands the funding agency for film for 2 years.
What’s your
favourite thing about your job and what’s your proudest moment throughout
your career?
I love the variety
of the things that I do and Number 8 is a really nice place to work with
lovely people. I have proud moments whenever a really good performance
finishes and the audience applaud and when getting positive feedback from
customers.
If you could live
anywhere, where would it be? Barcelona would be great as there is so much going on! Cultural
activity, galleries, restaurants, funky music and the SEA!
Likes: Chocolate,
cup cakes, gardening, reading, ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’, gritty TV
dramas, Costume dramas, music - reggae, dancing.
Dislikes: Intolerant
people - close minded people, tomatoes, most green vegetables
Hobbies: Reading, badminton, gardening, cycling
Favourite meals: Chaana balti (chick peas), Apple crumble and custard, Mexican
food, flapjacks
Favourite films: Some Like It Hot, Secrets and Lies. Too many to list…
How do you make a difference in your job? Hopefully with my positive attitude and
enthusiasm. I’m always open to new ideas and trying new things.

A BODY OF WORK
A Body of Work is a partnership commission between Hereford
Photography Festival and Dancefest to create works that celebrate the
achievements of Dancefest
and mark its 21st anniversary (as well as
HPF's!) through creative portraits of their professional dancers.
Two artists were commissioned to carry out the work, Kate
Brookes and Gigi Giannella.
The two works are quite different, Gigi has created 15 portraits of the
dancers ‘falling’, which are striking and modern. Kate’s work is built up
in layers of projection and photography, looking back over many years of
Dancefest’s work, and then printed onto sheer fabric which can be suspended
in a few different ways. There are 21 pieces in total
and they complement each other really well.
A Body of Work is currently in Boston Tea Party in
Worcester but Dancefest are hoping to tour the work around
different areas of Herefordshire and Worcestershire to raise awareness of
what they are doing and to celebrate the 21 years they have been working in
the two counties. They are not necessarily looking for a typical gallery
setting, just anywhere where people will see the exhibition, and also reach
a non arts audience.
If you have a venue
that you think would be good to exhibit the show, or you know anywhere that
would be keen to have it in your area then please get in touch with
Dancefest on 01905 611199 or info@dancefest.co.uk
