It is packed full of news, events, training, funding, and youth information for your interest.

News

EVESHAM ARTS 4 ALL DAY 2010

The 3rd Evesham Arts 4 All day took place on Sunday 18th July at Evesham Arts Centre from 12.00 – 5.00pm. There were many performances which took place on the main stage including singing, dancing, and music from the W Factor finalists, Vital Statistics Theatre Company showed off their talent in both singing and dancing, performances from Miramar Belly Dancers, and Pershore’s Community Choir group ‘Move On Up’ took to the stage.

In the studio, visitors took advantage of the range of workshops and lectures/talks that took place which included a Stress Management Workshop, a singing workshop by ‘Move On Up’, and a lecture/talk by organisers from the Regal Cinema.

A number of organisations came along to promote and advertise what they do. These included ‘Hands On Art’ – arts and craft, ‘Phoenix Theatre Group’ – local theatre group for all aged 11-99 years and ‘The Shutter Crew’ – professional event photography.

The day was an overall success and there was a large turn out of interested people experiencing what Evesham has to offer.

The Evesham Arts 4 All day is a partnership project between Evesham Arts Association, Vale of Evesham Network of Artists (VENA), Wychavon District Council and Sound Workshop.

A WINDOW ON THE ARTS

Droitwich

In Droitwich they have just finished another 6 week exhibition period at the old Beaubelles shop. Dodderhill School GCSE students, Droitwich Youth House, Westland Youth Club, Droitwich Youth House and Sarah James, poet and artist, all exhibited this time. There was a lot of interest from passers by. Discussions are being had about the next phase of the project.

Pershore

The Wana group at 45 High St goes from strength to strength. Pershore Market Town Partnerships have very kindly awarded Wana and the Vena group some funding to keep the shop going for a bit longer and some money for arts workshops with children and young people. The workshops are set to take place in the autumn with the work being exhibited at the shop later in the year.

Evesham

Planning is in process to start this in Evesham in the autumn so watch this space!!

ART COMPETITION!

ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in Stratford-upon-Avon has set up an art competition that will see artwork produced by the public on the walls of their new theatre.

My RSC Gallery which was created by artist Luke Jerram, is made up of 50 small boxes embedded in the walls of the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The idea is to fill each box with imaginative artwork inspired by either Shakespeare, Theatre, or the RSC.

Various artistic styles and materials are encouraged eg: drawing, sculpture, collage, knitting, metalwork etc.

To enter: you must be aged 18 years and above and based in the UK .

INSPIRED?
WORCESTERSHIRE & HEREFORDSHIRE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TOOLKIT

Organisations that are seeking to increase levels of participation in sport and physical activity have been encouraged to get inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by using a new physical activity toolkit – ‘Inspired?’

The ‘Inspired?’ toolkit for running Olympic/Paralympic themed events and sports programmes was introduced by the Worcestershire Partnership. All organisations that put on physical activity sessions such as dance sessions are able to get involved by viewing the toolkit online or request a hard copy version.

As well as providing examples of initiatives from all around the country, the toolkit will also be supported by a small grants scheme which is due to be launched in September 2010.

NEW CAREER GUIDES FOR VOLUNTARY SECTOR YOUTH WORK

The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) has produced 7 career information sheets for individuals interested in paid or voluntary work connected with working with young people in the voluntary and community youth sector.

Each information sheet covers areas such as what it is like to be in the role, the work, routes in, qualifications and training.

SHINDIG’S TOUR SCHEDULE

AUTUMN/WINTER/SPRING 2010/2011

SHINDIG is Worcestershire’s programme of live arts and entertainment for the community, whereby regional, national as well as international touring companies and performers provide a variety of entertainment for all ages including music, theatre, dance, children’s theatre, plus many more.

For the next 12 months, 37 performances are taking place at venues in Wychavon including Harvington, Bishampton, Offenham, Feckenham Village Halls.

PERSHORE PLUM FESTIVAL ARTS AND CREATIVITY STREET

On 30th August 2010, as part of Pershore Plum Festival’s celebrations, Church Street will be full of art and creativity including a large mural in the form of a banner with pictures representing the town of Pershore and Plums. There will also be several displays, exhibits, performances and workshops as well as an outdoor Art Gallery.

LOCAL POET AND SHORT STORY WRITER, SARAH JAMES

Up coming events

Wednesday 18th Aug – Sarah will be joining fellow poet Jenny Hope in a Worcester Festival Charity Reading from their collections INTO THE YELL and PETROLHEAD, held at Farrier’s Arms, Fish Street, Worcester. The open mic and charity reading, which is in aid of the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign, starts at 7.30pm and £1.00 per book sold will be donated to the campaign.

Friday 20th Aug – Sarah will be reading at the Phonic Room at Boston Tea Party in Broad Street, Worcester at 7.00pm as part of the Worcester Festival.

Tuesday 28th Sept – Sarah will be one of 3 guest poets in an up and coming women’s poet reading at Poetry Bites at the Kitchen Garden Café in Birmingham. Sarah will be available to sign copies of her new collection INTO THE YELL from 7.30pm. Please arrive early to book a floor spot costing £5.00 (£4.00 concessions).

 EXHIBITIONS BY LOCAL ARTIST, CHERRIE MANSFIELD

Cherrie Mansfield is exhibiting a selection of her artwork titled ‘A Closer Look’ in the form of abstract paintings at Pershore Library from 4th – 25th September. She predominantly uses oils and acrylics and her bold, expressive work is typically characterised by a rich use of colour and strong textures.

CROOME COURT – SUMMER CELEBRATION

Croome Court, a National Trust Property between Pershore and Upton, in association with Making Music are presenting a Summer Celebration which is taking place on Saturday 14th August from 11.00am – 3.00pm. Come along anytime during the day to the newly refurbished National Trust property. Bring a picnic and enjoy a range of voluntary music groups, learn how they operate, and maybe have a go yourself. Groups include this year’s W Factor finalists, The Greenwood Voices, Tuneful Tubes, Musyck Anon, Halesowen Handbells, Ensemble 1685, Vale Harmony, and many more!

WORCESTER EARLY MUSIC WEEKEND

18th – 22nd August 2010

Worcestershire Early Music is the new organisation that, with the help of others, runs the Worcester Early Music Weekend. A highlight for this year will be the ‘Pride and Prejudice Ball’ taking place on Friday 20th Aug from 8.00pm and is in aid of the Mayor’s Charities.

There will be a number of educational activities going on including ‘Nursery Rhymes for Old Times’, ‘Try it! Early Keyboards’, ‘Boomwhacking Great Fun’, plus many more. As for professional performances, ‘The Bach Duo’, ‘Lady Georgianna’, Cathryn Dew (recorders), Micaela Schmitz (harpsichord) plus others will be taking to the stage to perform.

RAISING THE GAME

FROM THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF YOUTH THEATRES

‘Raising the Game’, from the National Association of Youth Theatres (NAYT) is for those aged 18 years and above who use theatre and/or theatre techniques with young people.

You will have the opportunity to meet professionals, gain a whole range of new skills, share your own skills, learn new approaches, and reinvigorate your thinking and practice.

‘Raising the Game’ will be held from 30th September – 2nd October 2010 at Darlington Arts Centre.
The event costs £120.00 per person and does not include accommodation or travel.

Attendees must be registered with the National Association of Youth Theatres.

BLUES FESTIVAL 2010

Jinney Ring is hosting its 2nd Blues Festival which is being held on Saturday 21st August. The headlining act for this year’s festival is one of the best harp players, Simon ‘HoneyboyHickling who will be performing with his band ‘The DT’s’. Simon is an experienced harp player and has entertained crowds across the world.

The night will finish off with ‘The Big Blues Tribe’ which consists of a massive blues orchestra with a 5 piece brass section and excellent vocal harmonies.

There is a busy schedule lined up for the festival so why not come along!

FLUX – A BRILLIANTLY BIRMINGHAM EXHIBITION 2010-2011

27th November 2010 – 9th January 2011

Brilliantly Birmingham is now in its 5th year and aims to create exposure for the best of contemporary jewellery design through a highly visible and public event held at Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), in Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park.

Brilliantly Birmingham is an international contemporary jewellery festival that started off in 1999.  In just over a decade, the festival has grown and developed from an informal group of local designer makers to an international contemporary jewellery festival attracting designer makers from around the world. 

The Brilliantly Birmingham’s Festival will be taking place at a number of venues across the city. FLUX, is open to new and emerging designer makers who have no longer than 5 years graduated from their specialist area of study.

If you would like to apply to FLUX, there is an open submission followed by a selection panel process. No charge will be made to the designer maker for exhibiting the work, no public entry fee, or commission on work sold.

Each application must be submitted with a £20.00 administration charge. Payments can be made by cheque payable to Birmingham City Council

GLASS WORKSHOPS

AUGUST 2010

Come and experience the excitement of working with glass and glass kilns at the Glacier Studio, at The Fold in Bransford, Worcestershire. The workshop will focus on creating pieces using some of the glass materials used within the studio daily such as metal and enamel.

FANCY PERFORMING MUSIC AT A MEMORY CAFÉ?

Once a month, an event is put on at a Memory Café whereby performers play their music in front of people suffering from dementia and their families/support/carers. Its acts as a way for them to gather, discuss issues of concern, meet like minded people, or simply to relax and enjoy the music.

KIDDERMINSTER ARTS FESTIVAL 2010

Kidderminster Arts Festival (KAF) is just around the corner offering a 2 week program of exhibitions, street art, shows, and workshops plus much much more including Bernard’s Puppet Bonanza, Dragon’s Den, and performances from Hoodwink Theatre.

FARNCOMBE ESTATE OPEN DAY & EVENTS

Farncombe Estate welcomes you to their Open Day which is being held on Sunday 12th September 2010. Workshops and lunch bookings are at a reduced price if you book before 12th August 2010.

A fun-filled 2 day workshop where you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of media and explore interesting techniques and the results they can produce. The aim of the workshop is to take an old book and transform it into something magical.

SURVIVING PUBLIC FUNDING CUTS IN THE ARTS:

WILL YOU SINK OR SWIM IN 2011?

A one-day training course to get arts organisations in your region tuned into the financial cuts that lie ahead and what they can do to diversify their income, attract new sources of income and take the initiative before it is too late. This course will give people an insight into why they should take action now and how taking an open and entrepreneurial approach will stand them in good stead moving forwards. Follow up surgeries also available for those needing additional and/or bespoke fundraising support.

Running in London, Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool, Brighton, Bristol, Norwich, Gateshead, Exeter and Oxford in October and November 2010. Bespoke courses can also be arranged in your local authority area if you would like to take the initiative and drive positive action in your region.

The course is interactive and will incorporate relevant case studies and guest speakers. £175.00 per person, including lunch, refreshments and support materials. Maximum of 20 people per venue so book now to avoid disappointment.

WORCESTERSHIRE LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2011

The Worcestershire Literature Festival is taking place from 17th – 27th June 2011 and hopefully will involve everything from spoken word, poetry readings, seminars, workshops, theatre performances, outdoor street theatre, an artists and book stall market and much more!

Funding

ASDA FOUNDATION

The ASDA Foundation supports a range of good causes around the UK . It exists primarily to give support to existing projects being run by ASDA colleagues, although applications are open to all registered charities, community groups and individuals in the UK, as long as they have the support and involvement of local ASDA colleagues.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and will be assessed at the quarterly trustee meeting.

Eligible individuals/organisations must:
• operate in the UK ;
• be providing a clear benefit to their local community;
• be non-profit making;
• have direct support and involvement from one of the ASDA colleagues.

 ARE YOU PART OF A NEW, INNOVATIVE VISUAL ARTS PROJECT?

YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A GRANT TO HELP GET YOUR PROJECT STARTED

The Elephant Trust offers grants of up to £2,000 to artists and institutions (priority is given to small organisations and galleries) for new, innovative visual arts projects based in the UK .

Small charities operating in the areas of the arts and have an annual turnover of less than £100,000 per year can apply for funding of between £1,000 and £10,000 through the Foyle Foundation’s Small Grants Programme.  The Foundation which is one of the largest grant making trusts in the UK provides grants that are helping to make the arts more accessible by developing new audiences, supporting tours, festivals and arts educational projects; encouraging new work and supporting young and emerging artists; and that address special educational needs and learning difficulties. 
Larger organisations can apply for funding through the Foyle Foundations Arts and Learning Main Grants Programmes

THE TERRY PRATCHETT PRIZE
‘Anywhere But Here, Anywhen But Now’

Sir Terry Pratchett and Transworld Publishers have launched a new award for aspiring debut novelists -
The Terry Pratchett ‘Anywhere But Here, Anywhen But Now Prize’.

Transworld will offer the winning author a publishing contract with a £20,000 advance.

The award will be judged by Sir Terry Pratchett, Tony Robinson, Michael Rowley from Waterstone’s and two senior members of the editorial team at Transworld Publishers.

ART IN THE PARK 2010

Now in its 3rd year, Art in the Park is back. Free arts workshops for all of the family will be going on in all of Wychavon’s parks in August. Children’s Centres will be offering workshops this year too. We will have favourites back such as arts workshops with Sarah Edwards and African drumming with the fantastic Drumlove. New workshops this year include puppet and mask making with puppeteer Melvyn Rawlinson and slam poetry with Spoz who was Birmingham’s Poet in Residence.

So come on down and join the fun from 11.00am – 4.00pm.

PARTY IN THE PARK

Party in the Park is back for yet another year of showcasing talent, bringing the public together, and displaying what Wychavon has to offer. This will be the 7th consecutive year Party in the Park has taken place and we expect it to be just as successful if not even better than previous years.

ARTS EXTEND: YOUTH BUS

Wychavon District Council, Worcestershire County Council, The Youth Bus and Pablo productions have come together to run the Arts Extend in the Evesham area. Funded by Arts Council and Extended Services, film and photography workshops will be happening in three youth settings, Ourside Youth Centre, Honeybourne Youth Club and Wickhamford Youth Club. The projects are for 11-19 year olds and will be FREE. The workshops will be run from the fantastic Youth Bus. It is hoped that there will be screenings of the film and photography done at the end of each project. VITAL STATISTICS THEATRE COMPANY

Vital Statistics Theatre Company are introducing new classes to begin this coming September including Freestyle, Tap, Beginners Street, Musical Theatre, Drama, Piano and Singing lessons as well as classes in gymnastics.

AFTER SCHOOL ART CLUBS

The Summer Term saw another eight lucky schools have nearly 80 after school arts sessions funded and organised by Wychavon District Council. Sytchampton 1st, Tibberton 1st, Defford 1st, St Andrews 1st, St Barnabas Middle, Cropthorne and Charlton 1st, Ashton Under Hill 1st and Westacre Middle Schools are taking part this year. They have been learning about dance, drama and singing with professional arts workers and hope to perform again at Number 8 in the spring.

 

W FACTOR DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS

This summer W factor finalists have been performing at various events around Wychavon. Ade Holbrook has been organising and developing the young people’s skills and they are improving dramatically. So far they have performed at The Evesham Balloon Festival, Evesham Arts 4 All, The Frame Festival and are all set to perform at The Croome Court Open Day, Party in the Parks and Droitwich Salt Day
