Droitwich Arts 4 All Day

Saturday March 5th 2011 saw the third Droitwich Spa Arts 4 All event, held at the Norbury Theatre.  The aim of this event was to raise the profile of local arts organisations and artists, both voluntary and professional, and to show the range of opportunities open to everyone in the Droitwich Spa area.

There was a great range of performances, taster sessions, and displays on offer, including music from Worcester School of Rock, Worcester Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and W Factor finalists, along with a large range of displays of fine arts, and even knitting. Over 300 people were involved in the day, with much interest in signing up for activities.

Performing arts workshops were provided by Encore Theatre Academy. Norbury Theatre members hosted theatre tours which were much appreciated. And the bar team made sure everyone was suitably refreshed throughout the day.

And out of the event came an “Arts 4 All” Directory 2011 which is available from the Theatre, Droitwich Library, and can be viewed via the “For Droitwich Spa” website.

The event was organised by John Dudley, Liz McCabe, Jenny Davis, and David Goode, and was made possible through a partnership between For Droitwich Spa, The Norbury Theatre, and Wychavon District Council’s Arts Development team.

The universal feedback was that the public wanted to do it again next year!

Showell Gallery

The Showell Gallery at the Civic Centre, Pershore is now exhibiting paintings from Peter Hawkins! Come down and take a look at his work.

Peter has always been interested in the arts and over the last few years has been painting whilst on holiday. When he took early retirement at the end of 2009 he had the opportunity to spend more time painting and about three years ago moved from watercolour to acrylics and enjoyed the flexibility of the medium.

Peter likes his pictures to mean something to him – places he has been, people he knows or events that have had an impact on him.

Some of his pictures are for sale.

Evesham Library Art Exhibition

Evesham Library's exhibition area has changed since it opened after our refurbishment. They now have an area 24 feet long by 4 feet high, at the Oat Street entrance, which can be clearly viewed from all around the library.

The library has an exciting programme of exhibitions for 2011, and now on display is VW derelict which is a photographic exhibition on dereliction from Jennifer Hewson.  It shows the gradual decay of VW cars, though there amazing colours add vibrancy to an otherwise sad site and lifts it into the realm of "art".   It runs to 7th May 2011.

The Wellcome Trust is inviting organisations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards.

This adviser may be from a scientific or medical humanities background and must be named on your application.

Applicants are encouraged to investigate new methods of interdisciplinary working as well as new models of engagement in biomedical science. The scheme is open to a wide range of people including, among others, artists, scientists, curators, filmmakers, writers, producers, directors, academics, science communicators, teachers, arts workers and education officers.

The Trust normally gives grants to projects where an initial £75 to £750 can make a real difference to getting the project up and running. To be eligible, applicants need to be registered charities or have access to a registered charity that will be willing to accept funds on their behalf.

The type of activities supported in the past include; a grant of £250 to three young people in Leamington Spa who were trying to set up a youth club. The Trust gave them £250 to help set up the club in an old Scout hut; a grant of £50 to an unemployed ex-professional footballer in Yorkshire to buy footballs and equipment for a group of 100 or so tough kids to play football. Applications can be made at any time. For more information, visit: http://www.wakehamtrust.org/

Funding for Music Making Activities (England)

Youth Music, the UK's largest children's music charity has announced its grant making programme is open for applications. Through its "Open Programme", grants of between £5,000 and £30,000 are available to support projects that provide music-making activities for children and young people in support of Youth Music's goals.

Youth Music will fund any non profit-making organisation more than one year old that is committed to music-making activities for children and young people up to 18 (or up to 25 if they have special educational needs, disabilities or are in detention).

Youth Music aims to support music making activities principally in out of school hours such as during weekends, holidays as well as in breakfast and after schools clubs. Youth Music understands that programmes may need to begin in school hours especially if the proposal involves encouraging first time participation in music. To help with this, Youth Music will consider applications for programmes where up to 25% of the time is spent in school hours. The proposed programme should aim to encourage children and young people to eventually make music outside of school hours. The next closing date for applications is the 27th June 2011. Evesham A Window in the Arts – Cake Display

Over a six week period Michelle Pogmore delivered arts workshops to children within three schools across Evesham and displayed their work at an empty shop window at The Riverside Centre. The schools that took part were Bengeworth 1st School, Harvington 1st School and Eckington 1st School.

They chose the theme of the royal wedding and the creation of a royal cake shop. Although all of the schools worked separately they worked toward a combined window display using the colours of the British flag. All the materials used in this project were from the Worcester Reclamation Exchange.

Children from Bengeworth 1st school created the golden cupcakes, constructed from golden card and decorated with the paper rose made from a spiral of paper. They decorated their cakes with beads and filled their roses with vibrant transparent red wrapping. Ideas from the children were carried through to the other schools.  The children decorated their own cake stands which allowed them to develop individual designs whilst working within the same colour range.

Children from Harvington 1st school made the oversized wedding cake, each making a decorated single slice box with lid to combine in a beautiful centre piece. The children worked on individual pieces but often supported each other throughout the different processes of construction. They also created crown cup cakes on long cake stands. The cakes are filled with material that T bags are made from.

Children from Eckington 1st School created the hanging heart boxes. The boxes were constructed from card and tape, then papier mached with various tissue paper to strengthen and colour. As you can see they are all beautifully decorated with the children's individual ideas. They also created cup cakes. They were covered in blue tissue paper to contrast with the other schools.

This project has been funded by Evesham Market Town Partnership and Wychavon District Council.

Youth Music Online

For the last five years, Wychavon Youth Music has always happened in schools as an after school club.  But now for the first time the project has not only branched out to youth clubs, it is also offering a free online service. With the help of the Council’s funding, it means that more people will have access to the skills and expertise of Ade Holbrook, a project manager and music consultant who leads music sessions with young people.
The Youth Music project is aimed at young people in Wychavon who are interested in developing their
band, singing and music skills. Young people aged 11-18 years who write their own material and are in a band or sing are being encouraged to get in contact too.
To take part in the project, all the aspiring musicians need to do is email or post in a cd of their music for the attention of Tracy Grubb along with an
application form.  Tracy will then forward this on to Ade Holbrook who will provide a free critique of the work in order to help with their development both as musicians and their ability to promote themselves.

Before sending in a cd, musicians and song writers should initially contact Tracy Grubb, Community Development Officer, for further information, on 01386 565168 or e-mail tracy.grubb@wychavon.gov.uk

Arts Extend

During February 2011, young people attending Wickhamford Youth Club had the opportunity to participate in some practical, imaginative and enjoyable film making workshops. Under the supervision of experienced film makers, participants were able to develop their very own cinematic ideas and after five weeks created a film fit for the big screen!

The workshops delivered a very hands-on experience and allowed those participating to be involved in all aspects of the film making process. The young people decided to fuse a collection of weird and wonderful ideas within a 'sketch show' format, using green screen technology to place budding actors within illustrated backgrounds!
