W-FACTOR WINNER – GILES POTTER

Following on from his success in the W-Factor, Giles Potter entered a competition at the NEC in Birmingham called ‘Open Mic 2011’. Out of hundreds of applicants Giles got one of the 70 places on offer for the regional final.

Giles age group performs at 1.15pm on Saturday 29th October at the NEC, doors open 1.00pm. Places will be decided by votes and not necessarily talent so he really needs your support to reach the final.

If anyone from Wychavon would like to go and support Giles contact Tara Potter on Tara.Potter@dytecna.com who has 25 tickets selling at £8 each. Tickets are also available on the door at the NEC. For more information visit www.openmicuk.co.uk

PARTY IN THE PARK 2011

The 2011 Party in the Park events were another great success! This year we decided to make it a celebration of what is available in your community.

Many local clubs and organisations took part in the event, either to showcase what they do, give out information or be on hand to answer any questions. Local sports clubs came along and gave taster sessions for children giving them the opportunity to try the sport and see if it is something they may like to do. We also had live music with performances from the children involved in the Youth Music Project and W Factor, we had face painting, circus skills, henna and a climbing wall (Evesham & Pershore) which were all local, even the weather was mainly on our side! It was a great three days and very well received by all and Wychavon District Council Community Development Team would like to thank everyone who supported the event.

If you are a local voluntary or community group that would like to be part of the event and promote your group next year then please contact Tracy Grubb on 01386 565168 or email tracy.grubb@wychavon.gov.uk

SHOWELL GALLERY

From September through to December, Worcester based; Joe Walton will be displaying his work entitled Tuning Into Wychavon’ at the Showell Gallery in the Civic Centre, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Pershore, Worcs, WR10 1PT.  All viewing is free of charge.

Joe Walton started painting in the 1960s yet due to other commitments has only recently been able to make painting his main priority. Joe’s work is bold and full of expression with oil on canvas being his preferred medium of choice. His work consists of many traditional pieces although he has recently enjoyed painting more contemporary work finding his inspiration in music.

‘Tuning into Wychavon’ is an idea by Joe to reverse the Yin stimulus by using external visual references of Wychavon as the catalyst to inspire musical themes that he can associate with what he sees. The two are then married together in an image, again with an element of the surreal and cosmic.

Visit Joe’s website at www.JoeWalton.co.uk or contact him at Joe@flad13.fsnet.co.uk or call 07970 299171.

YOUTH MUSIC CHANGES

Youth Music’s new funding model will now be launched in November 2011. The Youth Music Programme will be focused on developing high quality music provision for children and young people.

The new Youth Music Programme will consist of three elements:

Youth Music's funding will be structured around modules rather than programmes. Each module will focus on an issue or group of children and young people that, through research and evaluation, we have identified are in need of support. Applicants will be eligible to apply for funding for multiple modules.

This new system will allow organisations to apply for financial support for areas of work which are priorities for their communities of children and young people. It will also allow applicants to seek funding that is relevant to their organisational strengths, priorities and partnerships.

The modular structure will offer more flexibility and responsiveness to developments within the music education sector including delivery of the national plan for music education.

To support the launch of the Youth Music Programme, events will take place across England to provide potential applicants with advice and guidance. This will include more information about the new structure, details of the specific modules available and demonstration of the online resources. The events will be free to attend.

NAYT INCREASES PARTICIPATION WITH YOUNG PEOPLE BY 370 PER CENT

Against a backdrop of rising youth crime and youth unemployment statistics, the National Association of Youth Theatres (NAYT) has released figures which evidence a massive 370 per cent increase in young people participating in theatre training and sharing events.

After launching a regional development programme in April 2010, NAYT has provided opportunities for young people to participate in professionally led theatre workshops and festivals where young people perform their own productions in professionally run venues. This is hard evidence proving the success of NAYT’s work.

Like all other youth service activity, youth theatres are struggling in the current climate and there is about to be a reduction in available services as well as closures in many areas. NAYT, the only organisation in England supporting local youth theatre activity has recently lost all of its government funding and fears threat of closure next year.

ART WORKSHOPS

Peter Hodge runs regular art workshops in the Worcester area and currently has two vacancies for his Thursday morning sessions at Wyre Piddle Village Hall.

This is a small friendly and lively group and would be suitable for anyone either starting out, or with a few painting or sketching hours under their belt. The sessions are in five week blocks and project based with lots of demonstrations and tips at all stages, although students should also feel free to work on their own subjects if they prefer where Peter would be happy to help out with advice and assistance.

The emphasis is on watercolour and sketching although we do occasionally wander into mixed media areas and most subjects are covered including skies, landscapes, still life, animals, floral and people. If you are interested or would like further information visit www.peterhodge.co.uk or contact Peter on 01386 442841 or e-mail prhodge@btinternet.com

ARTRIX IN BROMSGROVE

Well versed in comedy!

How’s this for an unusual night at the theatre?  Take the best comedic poets on the circuit, mash them up with a clutch of new ‘stand-up’ talent and the result is hilarity that rhymes (well some of the time!).

The main stage of the Artrix in Bromsgrove is the venue on October 28th when our very own Poet Laureate, Theo Theobald, plays host to a collection of his comedy chums, all for your merriment.

’Show us your funny!

If you think you’ve got what it takes to tickle an audience you can put that theory to the test at Bromsgrove’s Artrix Theatre.  Under the watchful eye and comedic coaching of Worcestershire’s Poet Laureate Theo Theobald, you will get the chance to release your very own ‘funny’, during a live show on November 26th.

Five weekly workshops, beginning on October 24th will help participants hone their funny bone, covering everything from writing and microphone technique, through to audience handling and conquering your nerves.

For information and tickets call the box office on 01527 577 330 or book online at www.artrix.co.uk

Samantha Dadd will be running a weekend art class for families on the 8th/9th of Oct. Samantha will be drawing on 12 years’ experience of teaching art in schools, 11 years teaching art to adults, her life as a professional artist and her own unique way of teaching both parents and children at the same time to bring you a course with a bit of a difference.

The 2-day course takes place at the beautiful, award-winning, Cotswold Conference Centre, Broadway, in a well-equipped, light, airy studio. Price includes materials, use of equipment, refreshments throughout the day and a delicious 3-course lunch. The day will be a mixture of talks, demonstrations and individual tuition but will be essentially practical in nature with everyone working on their own thing. You will leave at the end with a piece of work to be proud of. Cost - £199 for adults and £157 for children. The class will be no bigger than 12 to allow plenty of time for Samantha to give individual help. Times 10.00 am - 4.00 pm with the option to use the studio outside these times if you wish.

All levels and abilities catered for; from people who have never picked up a brush through to experienced artists. Children must be over 6 years old, accompanied by a carer, parent, grandparent, or other family member who would like to enjoy a creative weekend.

For more information email sam@SamanthaDadd.com or telephone 01386 725670.

Youth

NEW VIEWS PLAYWRITING COMPETITION

New Views is a nationwide playwriting competition for 15-19 year olds from the National Theatre (NT). From October 2011 the NT will work with 60 schools and colleges across the UK to establish a new network of student writing groups. Students taking part will receive online and in-person tutorials in playwriting from some of the UK's finest writers, see NT productions in London or via NT Live, and explore key and challenging issues for contemporary society raised by those plays.

Out of this process of research, discussion and tuition, students will write their own 30minute, one-act plays, to be submitted to the NT in May 2012. Rehearsed readings of a selection of plays from each UK nation and region will then be held at the NT and one play chosen from among these will be staged in Parliament's Westminster Hall with NT Company members, in July 2012.

For more information, visit www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/newviews or contact Mark Londesborough on 020 7452 3318 or mlondesborough@nationaltheatre.org.uk.

WORCESTERSHIRE EARLY MUSIC PROJECT

Worcestershire Early Music is running a project in Autumn 2011 which will now include early music education to Wychavon schools.  With the support of both Worcestershire County Council and Wychavon District Council, we are running a project with middle school students entitled ’A Tudor Betrothal’.

Students will learn about Queen Mary’s Betrothal to Philip of Spain. The project is set up to pair two Wychavon Schools and two Bromsgrove Schools with one school playing the part of the English and the other the Spanish.  Early music specialists will visit the schools in Autumn 2011 over 10 weeks, including taster workshops and after school sessions. Nobody needs prior experience but they can use instrumental skills if they are studying a musical instrument. Groups will meet, learning songs and dances, creating new ones of their own, and joining with their ‘sister school’ to work toward a show, which will be presented to friends, family and the local community on 29th November in Bromsgrove and 1st December in Wychavon. After this we intend to take the students on a ‘tour day’ where they can share the show with other area schools.

For more information visit www.earlymusica.org/wem or ring 01386 859648.
