Review of the Summer

Once again there was a packed summer in Wychavon for Youth Arts activities. Art in the Park was back for it’s 3rd year. For six days between 3rd and 13th August 2010, Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich welcomed nearly 900 eager and exciting residents, tourists, even passers-by to join in with the activities and enjoy the beautiful weather all for FREE! This year there was African drumming, mask making, puppet making and Slam poetry.

Party in the Park had some brilliant extras this year including the climbing wall, youth bus and County museum. The rain did not spoil the fun and about 850 children, young people and their families made it to see Youth Music and W Factor people perform and much more!

Bredon Playing Fields was packed with arts activity this summer for all ages. Workshops included photography, African and Samba drumming, crafts and street dance. 122 people came to develop their skills and try the arts for the first time. There was some great feedback and it was great to come together. This was organised by Bredon Recreation Group and Wychavon District Council.

W Factor finalists had a brilliant summer as they toured around performing at the districts events. They sung, danced and played music at The Balloon Festival, Evesham Arts 4 All, Croome Court Open Day, Party in the Park, Frame Festival and Salt Day. The young people and their families really felt that they had developed their performance skills as well as meeting new friends and developing their confidence and self-esteem. W Factor auditions will start again in January with the final being at Evesham Arts Centre on Monday 14th October 2011.

Hands on Art Summer School

The children aged 7-10 years did painting and collage and all said they would love to do more. If you want to find out what other courses Hands on Arts run contact www.ritathorn.co.uk

‘I Value the Arts’ Campaign

The National Campaign for the Arts (NCA) has launched its new campaign to give everyone a chance to voice their views on support for the arts.

At a time of recession there are reduced opportunities to take part in arts and this could have a major impact of the quality of people’s lives and the vibrancy of their communities. As the Government is encouraging people to engage and create a ‘Big Society’, the NCA believe those who care about the arts should have a say and get involved in the decision making about what their communities will look like.

If you want to have your say and believe the arts provide a valued public service please register your details at www.ivaluethearts.org.uk. You will then be kept in touch with plans for the arts that could affect you and practical suggestions on what you can do to strengthen the arts in your area.

Wychavon Youth Music

After a busy summer rehearsing with Ade Holbrook’s guidance, the bands performed brilliantly once again to acoustic covers at Party in the Park.

Many of them have now gone on to further education gaining sort after places at the Conservatoire in Birmingham, Drumtech in London, Leeds College of Music and Stratford Performing Arts College. The students said that without the Youth Music Programme they would not have had the confidence and skills to get the places.

Currently Wychavon is exploring funding opportunities to be able to continue to offer the programme to more young people over the coming months.

Arts Extend

Honeybourne Youth Club have kicked off Wychavon’s part of the Arts Extend project with film and photography workshops ran by Pablo Productions. Young people aged 11-18 years are learning film making and photography skills and will be using them to make a film of the 12 Moves Dance project. A screening of the film will be at The Railway Club, Honeybourne on Tuesday 19th October. This project is supported by Extended Sevices, Wychavon District Council, Worecstershire County Council and Arts Council. If you have young people interested in film and photography then contact jenny.davis@wychavon.gov.uk as there will be more sessions at Ourside Youth Club, Bengeworth and Wickhamford Youth Club over the next few months.

12 Moves

The classes have been taking place from 14 September to 19 October at The Railway Club, Honeybourne (6.30-7.30pm), and Simon De Montfort Middle School, Evesham (3.30-4.30pm).
