Showell Gallery

During June, July and August Richard Phillips will be displaying his photographs entitled ‘Peoplescapes’ at the Showell Gallery in the Civic Centre, Pershore. All viewing is free.

Richard Phillips was born in south London in 1947 and grew up in Birmingham. He now lives in Badsey, Worcestershire and works as a freelance educational writer, photographer and multimedia designer. He has a background in education, psychology and design.

Peoplescapes is a series of large composite photographic prints. The pictures show people in public spaces and their reactions to their environment. Each picture was made by taking numerous photographs from the same spot over a period of an hour or so. The figures are natural and un-posed. The result is a form of documentary photography that records some of the minutiae of modern life.

12 Moves

Look out for the weird and wonderful Creaturae Aquae, unusual aquatic characters appearing in shop windows across Worcestershire this June and July.

There are six Creaturae Aquae to find, from the Deep River Nymph (Flumin Nympha) to the Sleepy Water Sprite (Spectro Aqua Somniculosus).

The Creaturae Aquae are part of 12 Moves, the three-year project produced by Dancefest that aims to get Worcestershire dancing.  Find out more at www.12moves.com

Look out also for surprise dance activity from 12 Moves across the county on Saturday 23 July, part of the London 2012 Open Weekend.

Fluxx presents ‘Without Planning Permission’

Without Planning Permission is the latest interactive community theatre event from Fluxx. Rather than a traditional stage, it takes place in an open space (either in a theatre venue or otherwise) and gathers a small community cast in each venue it plays.

It’s a unique theatre project combining performance interactivity, improvisation and public engagement and is a new way to engage audiences with contemporary social issues through interactive drama.

In the show, the audience all become ‘residents’ on the same housing estate some time in the future, operating under a ‘big society’ policy. The show has three parts:

·         Part one: the audience move freely in the space to meet key characters in the drama and learn about a current crisis within the estate.

·         Part two: a residents meeting is called and the audience decide the fate of the central character.

·         Part three: a series of improvised scenes explore the consequences of the audience’s decision.

For each performance in a different location, local performers are recruited to extend the core Fluxx ensemble.

If you would like ‘Without Planning Permission’ to come to your community, please get in contact via the information below.

Available for booking from Autumn 2011 to late Summer 2012

Evesham Arts 4 All Day

Evesham Arts 4 All events, Evesham Arts Centre, Wychavon District Council and the Vale of Evesham Network of Artists (VENA) are planning the next Evesham Arts 4 All day which will take place on Sunday 17th July 2011 from 12pm – 5pm.

Evesham Arts 4 All is an open day at Evesham Arts Centre where local arts groups, organisations and individuals can meet, display information about their club/organisation, exhibit their work, perform and run workshops in an informal way to each other and the public. Last year they had over 20 organisations and individuals exhibit and over 500 people as audience and workshop participants. A large number of exhibitors attracted new members to their group and raised the profile of their work.

There are a number of ways that your club/organisation or you as an individual could benefit from this

·         A chance to network and meet other members of the arts community in the Evesham area.

·         A chance to promote your work/club to other groups and the general public which could result in new members, more work, raise your profile etc.

·         A chance to perform/exhibit a snippet of your creativity to others artists and the public again to promote what you do.

·         A chance to ask advice from other clubs doing a similar thing to you

The cost is £10.00 to exhibit at the event. This fee helps pay for the venue and related costs associated with running the event.

The Wellcome Trust - Arts Awards (UK)

The Wellcome Trust is inviting organisations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media.
Applications are invited for projects of up to £30,000 through their small & medium-sized grant programme, and for projects above £30,000 through their large grant programme. The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that
reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. The scheme is open to a wide range of people including, among others, artists, scientists, curators, filmmakers, writers, producers, directors, academics, science communicators, teachers, arts workers and education officers.

Youth Music 2011

The New Year brought a new look to the Wychavon Youth Music Programme as it branched out into the wider community for sessions in Youth Centre’s around the region while still maintaining its roots in the main High Schools throughout the district.

The support from the Youth Centres as hosting venues for the sessions was inspiring for the youngsters and thanks must go to both Droitwich Youth Zone and Pershore Youth Centre with their respective centre manger’s Rob Mace and Alex Mellor making the partnership a real success. The sessions consisted of the usual mix of songwriting, artist development, performance skills and instrument tuition and also included looking at promotion via the most common social networking sites as industry experts gave their views on how best to promote yourself at gigs, what to look out for when doing a gig and how to make sure it is the best possible experience for you and your audience alike.

Over the course of the sessions all concerned were incredibly pleased with the outcomes of the progress associated with their songs and performance levels and this has been proven at events and gigs around the region already. Appearances at Wychavon flagship events throughout the summer are a perfect opportunity for them to continue their excellent work rate and show all the skills they have learned while being seen by the community in which they live.

The schools’ courses have been of equal success with young people continually wanting to be involved in the sessions and committing both time and energy to the different tasks set for them to aid their musical journey. Comments from music teachers have been delightful as they recognise the importance of such extra curricular sessions which develop creativity amongst some incredibly talented young people and some of these comments can be found on the Wychavon website where interviews with the participants have been recorded for all to hear.

All in all the start to the year has been a successful and inspiring one for all concerned in the Youth Music Programme and the future for Wychavon’s young performers looks bright! There is more than one star in the region capable of big things in the coming season so keep your eyes pealed at one of Wychavon’s events this summer for a glimpse of the next superstar right on your doorstep!
