Wychavon Arts Development review of the Year

Once again it’s been a very busy year for Arts Development in Wychavon. So far we estimate for this year we;

  • Worked with 2535 children and young people
  • Worked with 123 adults
  • Worked with 1290 at family events
  • Held 60 performances
  • ran 1072 workshops
  • showed work to 63,783 audience members
  • ran arts workshops over 1,070 hours
  • worked with 39 partners
  • ran 22 projects
  • employed 28 freelance staff
  • held 43 rural arts activities

Some of the quotes we have had from people who have attended or participated in Wychavon’s arts development projects include;

Dear Jenny, our group absolutely loved the art sessions, and wonder if you have anything like that coming up again. We thought Sarah, our tutor was lovely, and I keep getting asked for more. Thanks”

Lindsay Read Coventry Homes A Window on the Arts workshops

“I just wanted to say that the Media session that Ade and Jules ran just before Christmas was absolutely brilliant! It has been one of the best received sessions that we have ever arranged for our young people and they were really buzzing when they left this session - I even had to drop some lads home as they were desperate to stay and complete their filming!!!

Anne Marie Purvis Bredon Youth Club film making workshops

“I hope for there to be more opportunities in the future for young people like myself as I know that I wouldn’t be anywhere near as confident or creative in my music endeavours had it not been for the youth music programme”

A Window on the Arts

After 12 successful arts workshops after school with The Littletons 1st School and Broadway 1st School with Michelle Pogmore the schools have created some wonderful oversized large flowers. They are being currently exhibited until 21st February in an empty shop window of The Riverside Centre in Evesham at the entrance to Market Square. This is part of the A Window on the Arts scheme which is taking place across Wychavon. There will be another schools exhibition following this until 14th March from Bengeworth 1st School, Harvington 1st School and Eckington 1st School. This project has been funded by Evesham Market Town Partnership and Wychavon District Council.

12 Moves in Evesham

Before Christmas, the Dancefest project, 12 Moves, hit the streets of Worcestershire as part of their guerrilla campaign. This spectacle created dance in unexpected places and when the project came to Evesham, images of dancers and the group’s logo and website flashed up onto buildings opposite Market Square, and several other buildings in the town.
The show was supported by the 12 Moves promotional team, who handed out balloons and flyers to encourage residents to learn more about the Cultural Olympiad project.

12 Moves is a two-year project across Worcestershire inspired by the People Dancing programme, part of the West Midlands’ Culture Programme for London 2012. The first part of the project began in July of this year, with two dance squads delivering sessions to young people and adults.

The initiative will grow to include performances, films and flashmobs culminating in a large scale final event in March 2012. It aims to give people in Worcestershire the opportunity to take part in dance for health and fun to see dance in surprising places. Sessions include street dance, creative dance, Zumba and Chance to Dance, for people aged 55 and over.

For more information about events, dance session and flashmobs visit 12moves.com or email info@dancefest.co.uk

Farncombe Estate - Sing more Africa!

Start: 18 February 2011 at 6:00 p.m.
End: 20 February 2011 at 2:00 p.m.
With
Chris Rowbury

Last year's Sing Africa! was so popular (it sold out very fast!) that Chris Rowbury is offering a further weekend packed with brand new harmony songs from across the African continent. A great opportunity to sing and move to infectious African rhythms.

Full-bodied harmonies from South Africa; overlapping rhythms from West Africa; gentle lullabies from East Africa; haunting, exotic melodies from North Africa; haunting cries from Central Africa.

This workshop is open to all whether you just sing in the bath, or perform in public. All songs have been carefully chosen and arranged for voice only, and will be taught by ear. No previous experience needed, just bring your vocal chords and your enthusiasm!

Please bring plenty of water to drink as singing for a whole day can be thirsty work. Also, wear comfortable clothes and shoes as there will be lots of movement while singing!

Call 033 3456 8580 to book your place. Visit www.farncombeestate.com for more details.

Training

Training for Artists and Art Organisation

The Worcestershire arts partnership, Arts Matter in Worcestershire, are organising some training for artists and arts organisations that work with children, young people and vulnerable adults in the Spring this year. They are working closely with Worcestershire's safeguarding board on this. For them to be able to pitch the training at the right level they need interested artists and arts organisations to complete the attached survey, so they have an idea about what experience of this subject people have in Worcestershire. They will then use this information to inform the training.

Therefore if you are interested in doing the training then they would be very grateful if you could spare a few minutes to fill out the attached questionnaire. The deadline for this is 14th February.

Awards for Young Musicians

Awards for Young Musicians believes that all musically talented young people – not just those from well-off families - should have the opportunity to develop their talent. That’s why it’s here – to help young people with exceptional ability from lower income backgrounds.

Many of these young musicians are struggling to meet the prohibitive cost of funding their gift. AYM’s job is to ensure that these young people can continue to make music, by providing vital financial backing and also supplying the opportunities and encouragement that give them the confidence to progress. Without its help, their future in music could be over before it even begins.

Wychavon After School Clubs

Wychavon works regularly with schools developing their after school arts provision. Currently the after school clubs are providing drama, music and dance sessions. Professional arts workers are  working alongside teachers to develop their long term skills, for an hour, on different days at the following schools:

Sytchampton First School
St Andrews First School
Ashton-under-Hill First School
Defford Cum Besford First School
Cropthorne with Charlton First School
Tibberton First School
Westacre Middle School

The clubs recently worked towards a performance that took place on 27th January at Number 8 Community Arts Centre in which each school took it in turns to perform a dance or drama act which included music and props. The drama performances were based upon a moral theme such as friendship and healthy living and included freeze frames, dialogue, physical theatre and story telling while those in the dance performance used scarves to portray animals with the music ‘the circle of life’.

If your school would like more information please get in touch with us by contacting Jenny Davis on 01386 565396 or email jenny.davis@wychavon.gov.uk
